terra - Second Eyes -
The exhibited works, featuring motifs of natural Japanese landscapes, extend the Terra series, which has been presented since 2019, looking toward the embryo of life on earth, where energies intersect. Originally, nature is nameless and without meaning as one might expect - an unbroken gradation of simultaneous and contingent movements outside the realm defined by language, such as oceans and mountains.
As the shutter continues to be released while being tossed about by the currents and winds, the moments when the boundary between what the eye can and cannot see is revealed in photographic images. The irregular sequence of events unfolds before our eyes as a series of planetary motions from the earth to the universe. Photographing is the act of accepting nature as it is, which I cannot control, and translating it into photographs to remember.
The release from inside the ground, the collision of the shimmering water surface and the rain, and the cave world that spreads out below the water surface... What do your eyes see when you look at the dynamic movement of nature, which is invisible to us, through photography?

Layers of Time: Tracing the Memories of Onagawa
"What does 'hometown' mean to me?" This question has lingered since the great tsunami that engulfed my hometown in 2011. As the third-generation photographer in my family, I have watched the evolving landscape of Onagawa from above, layering it with the memories of the past. The records of the tsunami from Chile in 1960, houses under reconstruction, the Onagawa Bay of years past, family photos taken in front of temporary housing, and wedding portraits taken by my grandfather— all of these are fragments of my hometown.
As I compare old maps and streetscapes with those of today, I feel the weight of the town’s "change" and what has been "lost." When I see people standing in new homes, snapshots damaged by the tsunami, and portraits of my ancestors held in my hands, the past and present connect, and memories are revived. I look upon these moments marked by "change" and "loss." Amid the intersection of uncertainty and hope, I hope the story of Onagawa quietly unfolds into the future through photography.
Profile
Born in Onagawa Town, Miyagi Prefecture 1977. Graduated from the photography department at the Nihon University College of Art. A visual storyteller, creates works based on personal stories. After graduating, worked as a freelance photographer, focusing on portraits. While the Great East Japan Earthquake struck on March 11, 2011, Suzuki’s hometown of Onagawa was destroyed by the tsunami, and her parents lost their lives. Since that time, has frequently returned to her hometown to record people in the area trying to move forward from the disaster. Sanseimokumi (Spirits of mountains and trees)
Humanity has long lived alongside trees.
They have warmed us, sheltered us from wind and rain, calmed our hearts with their beauty,
and inspired reverence, embodying the divine in their majestic forms.
In the end, people return to boundless nature.
Perhaps it is a single tree that points the way.
