The souvenirs and knick-knacks that decorate my drawing room are cute yet rather coquettish prized possessions of mine. My hunt for the gaudy and ornate (aka “kitsch”) began after a friend who I invited into the room described the décor as “very kitsch”. So, my thing is to visit places with diverse histories, taking photos along the way. The works I am showing here were taken predominantly in the western reaches of Aichi Prefecture in an area historically called Owarinokuni. Dotted with numerous old shrines, hamlets and shell middens, the area is known today for its quaint streetscapes. You'll see photos I took while tracing historical routes in that kind of environment. I've tried in my own way to convey the uniqueness that amiably characterized things I discovered walking about kitsch locations where you can literally see the layers of urban development. With the curiosity, I continue my kitsch adventure after nightfall, too. I hope you like it.
