As The Month of Photography, Tokyo celebrates the 25th anniversary of its inception this year, the “Photographers in Asia 2022” international exhibition that is a part thereof will be featuring China.
As you know, China is one of the world's largest powers with a vast territory and population. There are more than 20 provinces and administrative divisions such as autonomous regions, municipalities with provincial-level status and special administrative districts. What else is amazing is that a single province has an area and population comparable to the size of some countries. From that point of view, this time, Jiangsu Province, which has a long history of exchange with Japan and sister-city relations with Aichi and Fukuoka prefectures, will be spotlighted at the “Photographers in Asia 2020” international exhibition.
Jiangsu Province is located at the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in mainland China. It is crossed by many rivers and canals, and covered mostly by plains. Jiangsu borders Shanghai and its 1,000 km eastern coastline faces the Yellow Sea. The province has an area of approximately 107,000 km2 and a population of about 85 million. Located between the temperate zone and the subtropical zone, it has four distinct seasons like Japan. The provincial capital is Nanjing. In addition, there are many cities known in Japan such as Wuxi, Suzhou and Xuzhou. Jiangsu has also been an industrial area for a long time, and its gross production is the second largest in China (accounting for about 10% of China’s GDP), making it economically well off. Industries such as the machinery, electronics, automotive and petrochemical industries are thriving, and a growing number of top-ranked companies from Japan have established a presence in different parts of the province.
Historically, there was a time when Nanjing served as the capital of the Ming dynasty, and there are many historic sites such as ancient ruins, tombs, buildings and temples. There are many scenic spots where you can experience a plethora of natural, cultural and historical attractions such as the canal-crossed Tongli village of Suzhou, which is quaintly dubbed the "Venice of the East", and the classical gardens of Suzhou, which is a World Heritage Site. The photographs taken by each photographer record the powerful landscapes of the province and the people who live there, giving a sense of realism to what you see.
In this photo exhibition, 16 member-photographers of the Jiangsu Province Photographers Association will introduce the province's traditions, cultures and lifestyles. It is my hope that this exhibition deepens mutual understanding between our two worlds.
