Tatsuo Watanabe Profile
Born in 1949 in Yamanashi Prefecture. Graduated in economics from Seikei University. While in school, worked part-time for the “Shukan Sankei” magazine published by Sankei Publishing. Collaborated in the inaugural edition of Shogakukanʼs “GORO”. After that, contributed to “Shagaku”, “Weekly Post”, “Weekly Playboy”, "Weekly Bunshun”, “CanCam”, “AneCan” and many other magazines. Over a period of 21 years, took the cover photo for more than 900 editions of the “Weekly Post” magazine.
Has taken photographs for corporate commercials for Japan Airlines, Rakuten Eagles, Kanebo Cosmetics and many other businesses.
Has taken photographs of many idols for their record and CD jackets including Hibari Misora, Sayuri Ishikawa, Teresa Teng, Sachiko Kobayashi, Kumiko Yamashita and EPO.
Has published over 240 photo albums of famous people from actresses like Kumiko Takeda in her famed seashell bikini, Naomi Kawashima, Yoko Shimada, Naomi Akimoto and Riho Makise, F1 driver Aguri Suzuki, badminton doubles pair Ogu-Shio, and more.Has photographed more than 5,000 women over the past 41 years.
Began his “Jyuei” project in 2011 as a fun and fulfilling spin on farewell portraits.

Iʼve been taking gravure type portraits for more than 40 years now. Just women alone, I have easily photographed over 4,000. It began with work I did for GORO magazine - photos of Kumiko Takeda in a seashell bikini, a nude series of Naomi Kawashima, Hibari Misora for her hit single “Kawa no Nagare no yo ni”, Sayuri Ishikawa for most of her CDs from “Amagi Goe” onward, Rie Miyazawa and Kumiko Goto for Kit-Kat ads, plus Yoko Shimada, Yuka, AKB48 and so on and on. When cameras made the astonishing pivot from silver salt to digital, I photographed some very interesting women.
About to turn 70 now, Iʼve undertaken “Jyuei” as a new project. Itʼs a fun attempt at celebrating longevity through portrait photography by taking pictures of people in their waning years with a favorite thing of theirs or some kind of memorabilia. The idea is to capture their vitality and smiles one last time before …
These photos appeared as a series in Shogakukanʼs “Weekly Post” as the publisher was on board with the project. Every photo is accompanied with a story so, between looking and reading, it should be an enjoyable exhibit. Take your time to get a good look at everyoneʼs face and read what they think about life, death and all of that in-between.
