"SAO is always integrating leading-edge technologies within compelling stories.
I think it's a truly wonderful work of art.
It features AI, VR, and AR -
technologies that people are becoming more familiar with these days.
It shows us that if we create a future like this, the characters can really come to life.
As an engineer and as a fan, I think it's really exciting."

"What's appealing about SAO is that you actually enter the game itself.
The characters have to survive in this world.
And the drama that unfolds there is fascinating.
That's why many fans dream about entering this world.
"I want to go there. I want to try that game."
The story itself is full of these desires.
Our main goal for this exhibition was to create an entrance into that world."

"As engineers, we are always thinking about implementing the latest technologies.
We have this strong motivation to design and disseminate
intelligent algorithms and systems.
But as members of society,
we know that it doesn't end with just developing the technology.
We need to consider all aspects, including design and planning,
together to make something of value.
I think it's important to remember that as we do what we do."

Koji Sato speaks.

Koji Sato
"I have always been a huge fan of SAO and fascinated by the idea of virtual worlds.
I've always wanted to experience moving around freely in a world like that.
I think we have to ask ourselves on how fun and how engaging something is to us.
Otherwise, after we're done creating it, we may find it doesn't stir us emotionally.
So it's crucial to be conscious of the entertainment factor
while working with technology."

The view from behind Koji Sato reaching his hand toward the screen of "Meeting Yui's Heart."
Its game screen is shown on a built-in screen of a video game arcade cabinet. A few of those cabinets are aligned horizontally.

Tetsuro Sato
Sony Corp., R&D Center

Tetsuro Sato speaks.

Tetsuro Sato
"Looking at technology by itself, it can be hard to understand what's amazing about it.
When technology becomes part of entertainment, even if people don't understand at first,
they pay attention because it's interesting.
And while people are thinking, "This is cool,"
they begin to see how amazing the technology is.
That in turn causes us to think of new possibilities for the next technologies.
This mutual benefit leads to a virtuous cycle,
and I think it can lead to exciting new experiences
that we could not have imagined before."

I want technology to be seen as good for humanity.
I believe developers are working hard to research ways
to improve lifestyles and the environment,
and to enable people to enjoy themselves more.
It's a novel, so I can write the story as I please,
but now I am seeing technology catch up to my imagination.
I'm both surprised and happy to see this.

They must think, "How do we go beyond?""

"How will Kirito and Asuna consider this question and how will they find the answer -
I can't really be sure until I write it and see.
In the series I'm writing now,
I think the problem will expand from just one virtual world to encompass society.
At the moment, I'm also wavering between different ideas,
but I hope to find an answer."
